Construction of the Presidio Parkway, which will replace the deteriorating Doyle Drive, will begin in the fall, nearly two years early, thanks to $50 million in federal stimulus funding.

Bay Area residents can expect to see preconstruction activities in early August, which include tree removal and utility relocation. Native seed collection and plant propagation – to preserve local plants prior to tree removal and site preparation – are already underway.

Originally built in 1936, Doyle Drive is structurally and seismically deficient and must be replaced. The roadway is facing the same problem that threatens other pieces of the nation's infrastructure – the ravages of time and continual use. The Doyle Drive replacement, known as the Presidio Parkway, is a uniquely designed project that will create new open space, enhance transit and pedestrian connections and ensure seismic, structural and traffic safety.

To construct the new roadway and create space for construction activities, the area surrounding the construction site must be carefully cleared prior to construction. Trees will be removed adjacent to the existing roadway beginning Tuesday, August 11 through October 2009.

The Tree Removal and Protection Plan has been carefully developed in collaboration with certified arborists and landscape architects in coordination with the Presidio Trust. A close evaluation of each tree was conducted to verify which trees must be removed and which can be retained and protected. An extensive re-landscaping effort is a critical part of the project's design and will be consistent with the Presidio Trust – National Park Service Vegetation Management Plan. One hundred percent of tree material will be recycled or salvaged by Greenwaste Recycling Yard in Richmond, California.

Native plants and seeds are currently being collected and will be grown in the Presidio Nursery to be used for post-construction landscaping and wetlands mitigation. Learn more about native seed and plant collection.

Utilities in the project corridor will be relocated beginning in late August 2009.
